42 Shades of Blue Over You

Woke up this morning with the rain on my chest
Every drop a memory I tried to forget
Your ghost still lingers like a melody gone wrong
I count the shades of sorrow in my song

There’s the midnight blue of your goodbye
The steel blue silence when you wouldn’t cry
The navy truth in what you wouldn’t say
And the pale blue light when you walked away

Forty-two shades of blue over you
Each one a color my heart never knew
Painted my world in heartbreak’s hue
Forty-two shades of blue... over you

There’s a denim ache in the way I recall
The powder blue hope before the fall
The cobalt fight we never won
And the baby blue dreams that came undone

Forty-two shades of blue over you
Each one a whisper of love untrue
Bleeding my soul, staining me through
Forty-two shades of blue... over you

I tried to mix in a little gold
Some silver lining in the cold
But every time I reach for light
The canvas turns back to night

Forty-two shades of blue over you
I wear them proud like a scar tattoo
They tell the story of what we blew
Forty-two shades of blue... over you
